A Holistic Approach to Oils
Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies. It protects us from harmful external elements, regulates body temperature, and houses countless nerve endings, which enables us to sense temperature and touch. These senses are what create the soothing effect that we feel when practicing self-care, whether it’s massaging, applying pressure, or rubbing product into the skin.
When oil-based products are applied to the skin they penetrate deep down. They trap in rich moisture, nourish and protect the skin, and keep harmful particles from absorbing into the skin. Natural oils not only act as a barrier to keep toxins out, but they also have the ability to pull oil soluble toxins from the skin and body. Oils have been used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years as a healing method and technique. They are beneficial to both the internal and external body.
From an internal perspective, natural oils produced from fruits, nuts and seeds are extremely rich in vitamins and nutrients. They are typically either used as a supplement or added to a healthy diet and are important for supporting functions of holistic body wellness, such as reducing cholesterol, supporting heart health and a host of other beneficial healthy attributes.
From a topical, external perspective, natural oils used in skin care include but are not limited to olive fruit oil, avocado fruit oil, coconut fruit oil, jojoba seed oil, foraha nut oil, meadowfoam seed oil, red raspberry seed oil, sunflower seed oil, and hemp seed oil. Each contains its own unique benefits, but all are rich in varying healthy fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, omega 3, 6, & 9), and speed up the absorption of nutrients, support the joints, and much more. As we age our bodies dry out significantly and over time the body’s essential moisture is literally absorbed by the air thus making dry skin a key factor in early aging and creating a crucial need to replenish the skin with nature’s oils derived from trees, nuts, and seeds. Natural oils can be used as an important ingredient in self-care products to nourish, moisturize, and rejuvenate the skin. They add exceptional benefits to balancing the skin and body to support total body wellness.
It is important to note that these natural/fixed/carrier oils are completely different from essential oils. Essential oils are derived from plants, trees, flowers and roots and are distilled from the plant source to create essential oils which are plant compounds. Although essential oils also aid in holistic wellness they are not meant for ingesting indiscriminately and ingestion should be supervised by a physician/aromatherapist trained in therapeutic aromatherapy. The ideal way to use an essential oil would be to use it as an aromatherapy, or to combine it with a carrier oil and then apply it to the external body. You can also mix a safe dilution (3/5%) of skin safe essential oils (lavender, tea tree, rose, eucalyptus, etc.) into your products such as lotions, soaps, or creams. For further information on safe uses for essential oils, please visit https://naha.org/explore-aromatherapy/safety. As good rule of thumb to understanding the difference from a carrier oil to an essential oil, remember this: carrier/fixed oils are luxurious to the touch and are expelled/pressed from fruit, nuts and seeds. Essential oils are derived from plants, trees, roots and flowers, and are steam distilled. Most of the time, they have a light liquid viscosity.
